If you work your normal hours at night, at weekends or on a bank holiday, you are paid extra on top of basic pay. How much extra depends on your band.

When the night rate applies

  • Weekday hours from 8pm to 6am attract the night rate.
  • Saturday attracts the same rate for all hours, midnight to midnight.
  • Sunday and public holiday hours, midnight to midnight, attract the higher rate.
  • If more than half of a weekday shift falls inside the night window, the whole shift qualifies.

What the enhancement is calculated on

The payment is calculated on your basic pay, including long-term recruitment and retention premiums. It excludes high cost area supplements and short-term premiums. Overtime worked in unsocial hours is paid at time plus one half, or double time on public holidays.

Worked example

A full-time Band 5 employee at the entry point has a basic hourly rate of £16.40. Ten night hours a month at time plus 30% adds about £49.21 to monthly pay. The calculator treats it as pensionable pay, so confirm that with your payroll team.

Unsocial hours when you are off sick

In England, unsocial hours payments are not paid during sickness absence for staff who first started under the handbook on or after 1 July 2018, or whose basic pay is above £18,160. Staff employed before that date with basic pay at or below £18,160 keep them.
